If you’ve just taken CAT 2025, you’re likely in one of two camps: celebrating a stellar 99.5+ percentile or grappling with results that fell short of expectations. Here’s what most CAT takers miss: even with a top percentile, there’s a significant gap between your CAT score and actually converting that into an admission offer from the top IIMs.
Whether you aced CAT or not, there’s one strategic option that can get you into a top-tier business school by July 2026 without waiting another year: ISB’s Young Leaders Program (ISB’s YLP).
Let’s address the elephant in the room. A 99.5+ percentile in CAT is excellent, but it’s just the first hurdle. The journey from that score to a BLACKI (the top 6 IIMs) or FMS admission involves multiple stages—GD/PI rounds, WAT, academic background evaluation, and work experience assessment.
For those expecting an early 90s percentile (92-93), the doors to these premier IIMs remain largely closed. The conventional wisdom says: wait another year, prepare seriously, and make CAT 2026 count.
But here’s the problem with that approach: you’re losing an entire year.
ISB’s YLP is a 20-month MBA program (essentially a 2-year program, just like what IIMs offer) that started admissions last year. It begins in July 2026 and runs until March/April 2028.
The game-changer? The program accepts three test scores: CAT, GMAT, and GRE.
If you’ve scored 99.5+ in CAT, you can directly apply to YLP with your CAT score. No additional test required. This gives you an additional shot at a top business school while your IIM applications are also in process.
The timelines work perfectly: YLP interviews happen throughout April 2026, and admission results come out in mid-May—exactly when IIM results are also declared. This means you’ll have multiple admission offers in hand simultaneously and can make an informed decision.
If CAT didn’t go as planned, you’re not out of options. You can take either the GMAT or GRE and apply to YLP. Here’s the crucial insight: your CAT preparation has already done 60-70% of the work needed for these tests.

The GMAT has three sections:
1. Quantitative Reasoning
2. Verbal Section
3. Data Insights
Timeline: You’ll need 60-70 days to effectively convert your CAT preparation into strong GMAT performance.
GRE offers a different structure:
1. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)
2. Quantitative Reasoning
3. Verbal Reasoning

Both tests are significantly easier than CAT in the quantitative section, which is where most Indian students dominate.
Unlike CAT, which happens once a year, GMAT and GRE are available 365 days a year at test centers across India. You book a slot like a flight ticket and take the test when you’re ready.
But here’s the real kicker: GMAT and GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
Many business schools, including ISB’s YLP program, do NOT accept home-based online GMAT or GRE scores. You must take the test at an authorized test center.
While both tests offer convenient online at-home options, stick to the test center route for YLP applications.

Application Deadline: February 22, 2026 (Round 2)
Here’s what makes this tight timeline manageable: you get your GMAT/GRE score immediately after completing the test. Walk out of the test center with a score report in hand. Scan it, upload it, and your application is complete.
Unlike CAT, where you wait weeks for results, GMAT/GRE provides instant gratification.

Whether you aced CAT or not, YLP represents an additional shot at a top-tier MBA starting in 2026. For high CAT scorers, it’s a no-brainer backup. For others, it’s a legitimate path forward that doesn’t cost you a year.
With 70 days in hand and your CAT preparation already complete, the heavy lifting is done. What you need now is structured guidance to convert that preparation into GMAT/GRE success—not forum browsing or trial-and-error self-study.
The question isn’t whether you should explore this option. The question is: can you afford not to?
